There are many routes to becoming a successful film director. Makin Jan Ma, a Central St Martins graphics grad, has taken an odd route by evolving the characters of his future films and creating fashion for them. The two collections he has done is supposed to form a story for his film and are also simultaneously costumes for his characters. For example, one of the prints he has designed for his collection is called 'Guts', also one of the characters in his story. He sees his competitors as Spike Jones and Wong Kar Wai, as opposed to other designers. His brand is a vehicle for his film ambitions. I don't quite understand it all myself and I'm thinking that if you bought his clothes, the concept may be a little lost on you but hey, that's pretty irrelevant when you're obessed with his tshirt-attached-to-trousers one-piece like I am. Simple child that I am, it very much boils down to 'I like this.....' and 'I don't like this....'. But if Makin Jan Ma sees his clothing as costumes for future film characters, I wouldn't mind getting in an audition.
