I'm not usually into sweeping statements of 'expressing art via fashion' because however small, essentially, there still needs to be some teensy tiny degree of wearability (though my definition of wearability is pretty loose), otherwise why it fashion at all. Sandra Backlund, is from a fine art background and by using knitting as the main technique, she creates handmade voluminous pieces that are pieced together like a collage, sans sketches. Just looking at the photos is enough to be astounded by the shapes she has built up (and even more amazing that it's a working process thats not pre-determined) and by her use of knitting as an expressive medium.
