I had just about given up on posting anything here as it turns out the iMac in my room comes equipped with the smallest keyboard in the world rendering it useless when faced with a Mavis Beacon-trained typist like myself. Thank god for a PROPER iMac in the lobby complete with a cool light feature hanging over my head. Ostwald Helgason is a designer that has fallen victim to being featured on this blog on more than one occasion but I could not let the SS 09 collection go as I feel like they're getting into their stockist stride, having seen that they are now available at Beyond the Valley and Kokon to Zai in Portobello.
As always, Ballet Russes is their source of inspiration and for SS 09 they have chosen Les Noces (The Wedding) as their focal point. Look closely at the pieces and ye shall find old Russian portrait photographs hidden amongst the prints and revealing themselves to you in different ways (would enlarge the pics to get a better idea). They have also done a play on matrushka little-big proportions by making pieces look both fitted and oversized all at once (the check jacket below is a good example). Though they have taken Russian folk garments as inspiration, I'm glad that it is the prints and the colours they have used and not the shapes as they have kept everything really sharply cut in a way I have not seen them do before.
The excitement over the Ballet Russes exhibition in 2010 continues...
