Shorts over Trews?

Shorts over trousers?  Hmmm.... actually never crossed my mind.  Shorts under sheer trousers, yes, been there done that.  Shorts over leggings, yes but then that's practically the same as wearing them over tights.   Over proper trousers or jeans?  Not so much.  When a reader emailed me pondering this question with "Shorts over Trousers" as the subject line, I was a little stumped.  a) I don't wear trousers that often let alone attempt to layer them and b) had to dig around a bit for suitable sturdy shorts, most of mine being the flimsy type that are useful for layering underneath things.

Oh well, in the botched up words of Whitney Houston, it may not be right, but it's ok because it's nearly the weekend... and I'm not one to say nay to things...

Always nice to find another way of wearing these sheer trews...

I saw the post title and was wary, but I actually love the 2nd outfit and the 3rd outfit, but that second one! Amazing. How do you do it Susie, how?

My fave is the second outfit. Nice! :)

We thought the same with KD... Funny :D

I love the second outfit. It reminds me of what girls in my middle school would do in gym class but in a much better way

i love how you're able to make the strangest things/concepts look chic! i love the third outfit best

The sheer trousers are so wonderful!

i love your Grey jacket!! veryveryvery much!!

Strangely, I think that very same person emailed me a few months back because I was asked the same question! Too much of a coincidence. I advised she just try it and it if it works it works!
Queen Michelle

the concept never occurred to me either, but the last two looks have changed my mind. as always, you make it look easy.

I totally dig the third outfit!!
Never thought it possible but shorts over trousers seem to work out quite good!

Second pic!!!!!

Have you seen the new Johnny Loves Rosie collars on asos?

They're rather nice, architectural but easily wearable, perhaps a little too much glitter. I'm too cash poor for such adornments these days anyway. Some DIying methinks...

Anyway, I thought that you might like them.

shorts over sheer pants actually looks like it could be a real "look"

Love the last one!! With sheer trousers, it looks great!

Me and my friend were discussing if this could work a few weeks back. Sometimes i think, i want to wear those shorts today but i also want to wear those trousers. hmm... It's interesting to know others' opinions on the matter. Perhaps i'll try it tomorrow!

I had never thought of wearing shorts over trousers, but the sheer trouser outfit especially really, really works! Very clever =]

Ooh- I confess I was never a fan of the sheer trew. However, after seeing them with the shorts layered over the top here I must admit I'm warming to them!

What a coincidence, i had just finished perusing Marc Jacobs fall06 collection, where skirts over trousers reigned (something about its oversized knits and overall grunge mood appeals to me so much, i keep on looking back at it for inspiration) and wondering of ways to translate it outside the catwalk. I quite like the sheer trouser idea, specially paired with that cardi jacket.

the last one is mad good!

That Lanvin blazer & Carola Euler Stills grey jersey cardi-jacket are just GORGEOUS!

The second pic just to be clear it was my first thought well actually second after nose pressed to screen to lust after Lanvin tux. It is just the proportions with one and two that makes shorts over trousers such a trial and a bit of a no no.

Absolutely love the second and third outfit. The navy trews practically look like leggings. The layered sequin shorts don't work that well unfortunately, under the denim shorts. They look almost like poorly-fit leggings? I love the top half of that outfit though.

I think the second one. Interesting idea!

I actually really like this! the first two looks specifically. I think you have to be quite petite (like you) to wear shorts over pants though...so much fabric can make a girl look frumpy. damn!

laura...xx

i saw shorts over trousers at Number (N)ine's spring summer 2009 show actually...

When I was reading the text, I wasn't too sure about this combo, but I actually quite like the last two looks!

Woah - those sheer pants. So Jasmine.

My favourite is the second one, although the last one is pretty great.

That sheer pants?!?! Cool. How do your wear that alone? Looks translucent! But great job, I think the third look is awesome and creative!

Is It comfortable? That's always my main concern.

I wanna try this now!

When I first read the title I was like what?

But after seeing it. it looks gorgeous. I love the second one. The trousers look like a pair of skinnies, Look great with the shorts. Ill defonitely be tryig this look.

At #2 I thought, "Yeah, that's nice", but scrolling down to #3 I thought, "Hell yeah, that's it!"

And I really like your hair. Mine is not nearly as long yet, but all the life has gone out of it and it needs a cut again... I'd like to have full long hair though.

ooooh i love the second pic the outfit is great and the jens trousers - amazing! so sad he is stopping his line... :(

I love the first look.
I probably wouldnt be brave enough to wear it with the trousers but u've pulled it off.
good job!

The first outfit is tremendously brilliant. just WOW.

I'd say the sheer number is my favo. I might even try that. You know that's pretty rare for me to even think that while looking at you outfits.

Watch this space, I think this could be a new trend.

As everyone said when I read shorts over trousers I thought no way, this would be frumpy and bulky, but after seeing it I've totally warmed to it. Im really tired of wearing shorts with leggings and tights so pairing them with trousers or even skinnies is a brilliant new idea. Outfit no 2 is amazing. I will be wearing this look in the furure.

that is a SWEET Lanvin jacket!!! i really like that cardi-jacket too

In my case, it takes a certain getting used to... that combination you're projecting but it's not bad. Kind of refreshing, actually!

the last two are my favourite, I cant get over those sheer trousers, love love it!

I don't think I like the first one, but the second two are cute!

First outfit is amazing.

I'm not so sure about the first outfit - the trousers aren't very flattering to your legs when paired with the demin shorts.. the other two work so much better than I would've thought. particularly no. 2, navy with black sequins never would've occurred to me but it really works in that context!

Another SB success story!

the last two outfits are strangely wearable. not something i could conjure up for sure! those navy trousers are absolutely divine, are they by any chance available online?

I love the last pic especially! I love when you pull out those sheer pants. you find the most creative ways to pull them off.

These are very intriguing. Though I'm rather shocked it is a new combination for you!

No, sorry -it's all gone a bit too Nathan Barley for my liking, 'it's good because it's shit, yeah?'

Thank you for adding me to your bloglist! I have also added you to mine.

And of course this is another amazing outfit. But what else could be expect from you! ;)

Woah, I really like these, unexpected but they work. I love the sheer trousers in the last look!

  • It's back to ol' YouTube vids then... I'm obsessed with this track by Miike Snow... a little disturbed that these are the same guys who came up with Britney's Toxic...
