I was really gutted that I didn't get to see the Melissa concept store whilst I was in Sao Paolo. Melissa is one of those brands, like Irregular Choice which physically hurts my brain as I try to figure out whether I really love the shoes or really hate them. It's a moment that leaves me wanting to take some Nurofen or something afterwards. With Irregular Choice, it's the oddness of proportions/embellishments that leaves me confused. With Melissa, it's the plastic material and dithering about whether it will give me the stinkiest feet in the world. However, with these 'Joy' shoes designed by longtime Melissa collaborator Alexandre Herchcovitch, I am definitely down for them seeing as I'd wear tights or socks with them anyhow. As I was sorting through my shoes and lined up my flat lace-up oxford/brogue type shoes and counted seven pairs, I did think that this was probably as many brogues as most guys owned in total. I thus shouldn't REALLY be adding another pair to the mix...but the black and white plastic is ever so intriguing and a little different from the usual patent affairs.
The colours on offer are pretty unusual too.... pink or purple rubber brogues anyone?
Anyhow, after seeing the video animation (press on the video to pause/play.... odd vid configuration...), I'm up for latex/lame shiny SHINY black leggings (that promise of reviewing the best ones out there will sadly have to be broken as I could not for the life of me get my mitts on the Kova & T ones...) and wearing some shoes that HAVE to give me happiness seeing as they're called Joy....
**EDIT** VIDEO REMOVED DUE TO ANNOYING STARTER NOISE

Heh, I know what you mean about irregular choice shoes. I feel exactly the same. Do I applaud their brave design choices? Or, are they just too 'studenty' and over done? The jury is still out.

Those are so cute, but I'm so anti-plastic shoes that I'd never buy them.

ooh, the purple ones are nice...

Pink brogues! I heart! I do wish they come in leather though..

Do you actually want/need those Kova & T ones? They are still everywhere in the US. I can ship you a pair.
I am afraid of plastic shoes, too.

Oh my god those purple ones are too good!
Posted by: gnarlitude jen | 06 August 2008 at 20:34
I'm going to buy these. I have a lovely aunty in brazil who lives on the same street as the flagship Melissa store :O It's a shame there aren't stores here :(

i have been slightly baffled by the jelly trend; i mean..isn't it just hot and sweaty?!?
BUT
these are so ooooo seductive, i want the pink ones!

:O im loving the teal and purple ones! plus ive been looking for something a bit different cause i dont like the topshop brogues. aw theyre just so cute!

Oh I have a pair of Melissa's and they really aren't that bad. They are fabric lined so the smell isn't as bad any regular shoe. Plus they are super comfy. Although you need to get your exact size because they don't stretch.

melissa's are great! they dont smell at all (initially) and are so comfy... except after having mine for over a year and a half, thats when they started to smell bad and the rubber stretched a half a size. granted I wore them day in and out and i threw them in the washing machine a few times. still they are totally worth getting!

I love Melissa!! The shoes haven't been on the scene in a long time, or I've just been ignoring them.
You'll never believe where I found my jacket... FOREVER 21! It'll probably rip to shreds in a week (haha hopefully not), but who cares it's cute!

Oh my, I NEED those. I had seen the black and white and like them well enough, but the pink and the gold are both too good. These would be an amazing alternative to rain boots. I can't stand big clunky wellies.

I so thought of you when I saw those brogues! I've been reading up on this brand lately. My big debate was over the cost vs. the materials. I think the price is just a tad to high for me align with their shoes.
It seems like they have a lining which may prevent the sweaty factor.

i love melissa shoes. I've got two pairs and they are super comfortable. i tried on the black and white brogues and unfortunately they didn't look very good. i'm very interested to see if zaha hadid's designs make it into production.

I just did a post about Melissa shoes and Zaha Hadid designing for them. I am not sure I would wear plastic shoes but this company is definitely unique :)

I love Melissa shoes AND Irregular Choice, even the ones I would never wear! I appreciate the uniqueness. :]

I bought the black and white ones and am in love with them! I thought they would be extra sweaty being plastic but they turned out ok so far... I am from Brazil and grew up wearing little Melissa jellies. It was a summer treat to buy a few in different colours.

love the pink ones! they are so cute.

I'm not sure about Irregular Choice, I think they just have to much going on with them. The plastic shoes look great and they should keep your feet dry as well which is always a bonus.

i kind of like the odd color scheme actually. i didn't think i would but i kind of love the green ones.

I totally saw those shoes (the top ones in black and white) in a shop and considered them! But I wasn't decided about the rubber... Doesn't seem the comfiest to me, and if I'm going for rubber I might as well wear rain boots!

that's exactly what I'm thinking when I see melissas or those jelly shoes..
oh strangely enough, I get that feeling of them being plastic-y about lame leggings too :S
but they do look quite funky though ;)

I just bought a pair and they're pretty comfy... they look great too and the black pair go with anything!

in rio, all my friends bought melissa shoes and spent hours and hours trying on every shoe in every available color (yes thats right...) -
but none of them have worn them ever since!
hm.....

I have the pink ones! I use them mostly with tights and well... my feet stink and sweat a little, but the shoes are so pretty that I can handle it.

I just noticed that we both blogged about these Herchovitch Jelly brogues on the same day. What a mad coincidence!
Still haven't gotten my hands on a pair though. Will probably go for the purple ones or both a purple and a green pair if I'm feeling decadent.
