Cage Campaign
Mind is refreshed and ready to type something a little more intelligent than simply 'Look at me in a floral cage skirt!'. Apologies for post-repetition/expansion. Very tardy of me indeed. However it had to be recalled and retold. So I ambled into the Acne SS09 show in my floral cage skirt worn over a vintage dress with my Sophia Malig floral leggings and Ann Demeulemeester jacket and topped off with the new Marni shoes (comfy for five hours but I did have a pair of emergency flats with me after that....). The show was being held at the Acne headquarters and so all the Acne peeps were there. All the different countries' press reps, the creative team etc, so me showing up in the floral cage skirt could easily have ended up being a bit of a laughing stock. I might well be known as the 'The Girl who Showed Up in an Acne Knock Off.' However, I was pretty defiant in my campaign. As soon as the show was over and the chit chat and meet'n'greet was going on, in preparation for the post-show dinner which was also held in the show venue for all guests, people started asking me about my skirt. I can't quite remember how many times I retold the story but it was quite a few....it went something like this...
'I have a bone to pick with Acne. I saw the cage skirts in the SS08 show and waited and waited, and it never turned up in-stores online or in London. So a friend of mine (that's you Angie...!) made this for me....'.
The story was rolled out to the Acne press people who seemed to love it. The production guy at Acne heard it and he apologised. Who knows what they were thinking secretly but the final conclusion was that the Acne press people said they would try to track down the cage skirt and get it over to me.... who knows how that will transpire but in any case, it's good to know the skirts weren't discarded as malfunctioning show pieces (apparently Leigh from the Misshapes wore the cage skirt to the Acne x Lanvin party in Paris on Monday...).
But what of the show? I did a write-up for Dazed Digital but at the end of the show, all I could say was 'Very Acne...'. Not very intelligent sounding at all. What I meant though was that all the pieces seemed to have high-end aspirations and editorial approaches; sheer stripy loose leggings, exposed seams, sheer panels, jutting out hip shapes but then it was all equally casual-fied by the loose/relaxed fits and the very 'day' fabrics.

i love love love your outfit! perfection :)

i dig the shoes, must had been a mad on that street.
i'm not a fan of the menswear...(what's going on this season!). a bit too americana for me. and the unstructured jacket seem too outdated. however the women's collection all over the place... those see through pants remind me of what liza minelli wore to the hairspray premiere a while back...meh.
but you're always great.

lord susie! it's so weird seeing you in the real world and by that i mean seeing photos of you (on my computer screen) in which you are actually standing in broad daylight! haha i think to me you exist in some strange mix of cyberworld/real world/london but needless to say you look wonderful! love the marni shoes but especially the cage skirt with those leggings.

The cage skirt looks amazing and those shoes are to die for! I guess the Acne cage skirt is one of those elusive pieces that only surface with celebrities.
You definitely proved that we need more of the cage skirt.

I've just read your article for Dazed and it's not one bit 'very acne' - it's very intelligent and informative.
Your outfit choice was obviously perfect for the occassion, with the Marni shoes to kick that cherry off the top! Let's hope you get a real Acne cage skirt in the post, so we can all see with delight. Cx

I love how you tempered down that beautiful floral pattern with the neutral trench. So pretty!!!

Those are some brilliant pictures of you! So nice that you should be getting the skirt now too.

Those floral leggings you have on are amaaaaaazing! And I love those horizontal stripe black chiffon ones in the runway pic on the left!

Hey Susie (: (: (:
Wanted to comment yesterday but was really zonked out from a long day.
I have to say I love your outfit, but in particular the cut of that jacket! The cage skirt is a great idea and to think that you'll be getting your hands on it!
The universe must have somehow conspired to help in one way or another - or perhaps its just the silent voice of that cage skirt.

I think you will love the random elements of cagey-ness in Jean Paul Gaultier's couture collection.
Did you mention something to him while you were in Brussels?
Posted by: Alice | 03 July 2008 at 17:13
I was a bit weary about the caged skirt, since in my head, I was pairing it with flowy skirts and dresses and it didn't appeal to me. But I do like how you paired it with the dress, it provides that extra dimension of interest and structure in the outfit.
Btw: the shoes are C-R-A-Z-Y! Love them!
Posted by: Dee | 03 July 2008 at 17:14
the neutrals with the florals are so gorgeous, i love the patent shoes thrown in the mix too. and it must be the coolest thing ever that you went to the acne party and they're going to hunt you down a skirt!
Posted by: selina | 03 July 2008 at 17:17
i'm digging the quality of these photos! it's all so very sart-like.
Posted by: M | 03 July 2008 at 17:26
This is one of my favorite outfits of yours ever and I love how you can do florals in a non-cutesy way (mixing them with the cage skirt and killer Marni heels). I want to take lessons from you!
Posted by: liebemarlene | 03 July 2008 at 18:33
I just wanted to say i love the outfit it's gives the outfit a twist with a bit of florals also it gives the outfit a unique edge.

That is definitely one of my favourite of your outfits!
Posted by: floraposte | 03 July 2008 at 19:41
Whoops! Meant to say as well not terribly impressed with the look of the Acne collection. The trousers in the last photo seem to have a touch of the shell-suit about them.
Posted by: floraposte | 03 July 2008 at 19:42
I'm so loving the outfit!!! yay! you're in Stockholm Street Style... love that site a lot!
I so envy you because you went to Stockholm to catch the shows! lol

Best protest gig ever!
The cage skirt went boldly where no cage skirt had been before.
Your photo is lovely - quality camera and your outfit of course!

coveting those shows.
and intellectualism is overrated any way. it WAS very acne.

i saw those pictures of leigh and immediately thought - SUSIE! haha.
Posted by: Lucy | 03 July 2008 at 21:26
susie, only you could pull a story like that off with such finesse.... kudos!
:)
Posted by: lady coveted | 03 July 2008 at 22:05
I agree, very Acne.
Your shoes are the business!!!

What Lucy said: when I saw Leigh in the cage skirt, I thought, "how did she get that?"
Posted by: Tubemouse | 03 July 2008 at 22:14
I love it! The look and the story. I can't wait to see if/when they send it to you.
Posted by: Cammila | 03 July 2008 at 22:28
I'd love it if you got a cage skirt. I think it's great that you told them exactly what you thought.
You looked great, and I admire the way you matched your legwear/tights/leggings to the cage skirt. The shoes were the perfect touch.
Posted by: enc | 03 July 2008 at 23:45
You go girl! That's awesome. The outfit is incredible and you look like the girl who is kicking Acne's butt, not showing up in an Acne rip off.
Posted by: Lady Smaggle | 03 July 2008 at 23:59
I adore everything about this outfit, including your cute almost-smile!
Posted by: Kori | 04 July 2008 at 01:31
Sounds like you had a marvelous time, you sure look like you did!
btw, not quite the same type of cage skirt but cagey in nature nonetheless.

Did you see that jean paul gaultier (whose clothes i don't normally like) did something similar over coats (furs, which wasn't great - hope you see what i'm sort of going for here) and dresses for the couture show aw-08 http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/F2008CTR/complete/thumb/JPGAULTI ...?
Posted by: Sara | 04 July 2008 at 11:22
I thought of your skirt the moment I saw the JPGaultier Couture collection and I was wondering if we might see you in a leather buckle cage skirt soon.
Posted by: Meg | 04 July 2008 at 13:45
girl you look gorgeous! and i would kill for those marni shoes (;
Posted by: isabelle | 04 July 2008 at 14:20
The fact that you wore the skirt to the Acne show is fantastic, for so many reasons! I'm so proud of that little skirt right now, it's travelling the world!
Posted by: AngieMontreal | 04 July 2008 at 14:59
How on EARTH did you walk on the cobble stones in those shoes?!?!
Posted by: Penny | 04 July 2008 at 16:30
The leggings look really cool with the skirt and those shoes. I love the whole outfit especially how the florals don't look to girly.
Posted by: Sarah | 04 July 2008 at 16:37
I love the way you wore your cage skirt and that Ann D jacket was such a great buy! I would love to see you out in action with the cage dress though. and RE the campaign - it'll be real nice for you to get an Acne version but I hope they get the point that they need to produce those pieces they show at the shows!
Posted by: jess | 05 July 2008 at 00:26
ooo exciting!! and you looked fab! i am still in wonder of how you walk in those Marnis
Posted by: Fashion Tidbits | 05 July 2008 at 07:25
