Shameful Shade of Pink
Gutted after finding out a pizza place we wanted to try out was closed, the boyf and I sauntered up Berwick Street towards Oxford Street, wanting to seek solace in Beard Papa's instead...
We walk past one of those non-descript, supremely cheesy/cheap clothing stores that litters the crap end of Oxford Street...
Me: Ok, is it me or is that pink dress in the window looking really nice....
Boyf: I'm thirsty, I need a drink....
Me: Seriously... those different layers of ruffles... that shade of pink... dear lord... I think I'm rather liking it...
Boyf: Ok, but if we're gonna go in there, it has to be a fast and sharp operation...
Me: Ok...we're going in, we're going in, oh dear lord, there's a guy fixing computers and mobile phones there...
Boyf: Don't lose sight of the target! Pink dress, pay, get out and then thirst quenching...
Me: Ok, ok ok *spots pink dress immediately*. Ah...it comes in blue as well...
Boyf: Blue looks cheap. Pink is better.
Me: Ok, ok, ok... oh my god, it's £7! That's disgusting...
Boyf: The till is up there...
Me: *Wide eyed* The jewellery is £1 a piece or 7 pieces for £6... wow, this is very very mint (Susie Bubble language for 'It's so bad, it's cool...')...
Boyf: Pay!
Me: Wow... I haven't paid for a dress with cash in a while...
Boyf: Let's get out through the back door.
*We leave through the suspicous looking side door at the back*
Boyf: I think I could smell 'cheap' back there...
Me: I feel really really dirty... let's go to Beard Papa's and stuff ourselves with cream puffs just to go completely mental...

(Yes, I am REALLY rinsing the new Pierre Hardy x Louise Goldin ankle boots...)

oh, how cool is that!?
lovely dress!!

Wow! I never pay attention down the crappy end of Oxford Street. It's perdy!
Posted by: Suzi | 31 May 2008 at 19:59
Just for the record, I have a hideous looking YSL piece hanging in my closet that shows price doesn't equate to amazingness.
Love,

Hi! I am an avid reader of your blog. That dress is really cute, I have one like it in black. Please check out my budding blog!

If it looks good who cares about it being in a "supremely cheesy/cheap" shop. I always say it's not what you wear but how you wear it. This is a beautiful dress. And for £7 - even better!

this is such a delightful story... and you have such a delightful pink dress.
mmmm beard papas

Your new dress is gorgeous!
Posted by: yulanda | 31 May 2008 at 21:18
What a bargain! It owes you nothing!! Such a funny post; did your boyf have that put-upon expression common to most males dragged out clothes shopping on a Saturday?
Posted by: floraposte | 31 May 2008 at 21:25
I'm always so jealous when people recount conversations like that.. Roald Dahl, the Fug Girls (although I know for sure theirs are made up...)
Anyway, that wasa little off-topic. But did you really say all that? Because it was very funny! Oh, and I love your dress! My friends occasionally want to go in that sort of shop (such a generalisation: cheap end of Oxford Street) and I'm always way too horrified.
One more thing - Beard Papas. Yum.

embrace the cheap! i should be so ashamed of where half my clothes from, but it's too much effort to care... :) you look hot in the pink dress!!
Posted by: MHBass | 31 May 2008 at 21:41
WOW!
great buy!! that dress is stuning!
Posted by: saray | 31 May 2008 at 21:55

It looks great on you! Fab dress. Congrats!
Posted by: Everybody Says Don't | 31 May 2008 at 22:14
You wear it well. I personally adore cheap clothes, but those overwhelmingly bright and crowded stores do make me a bit nauseous...
Posted by: The Clothes Horse | 31 May 2008 at 22:21
I go to Beard Papa's every Friday night! Must cut down...
And wow, what a great find.
Posted by: Noel | 31 May 2008 at 22:54
what a find! and i love the way you write.
Posted by: anna | 01 June 2008 at 01:50
OMG i love it! I don't usually go for bright pink things, but that is absolutely gorgeous...style-wise and price-wise!
Im sure ive seen something similar somewhere, but i can't think where(?)
Awwww i want one too!
Posted by: Indian Rose Fashionista | 01 June 2008 at 01:52
Gorgeous - how is the material though? If it doesn't feel like it's from 'that end of oxford street' then all the better! Yay to no-fashion-snobbery! ;-D Xxxc

Great outfit! I have a pink dress to wear to a wedding tomorrow and I think I might steal your idea and wear it with black tights and tall, tall shoes.
Posted by: Rhiannon | 01 June 2008 at 02:34
That's just a fabulous colour of pink. i love it!
Posted by: Steph | 01 June 2008 at 03:04

now thats why we love cheap shops! i love that dress, the rufflyness is amazing.
oh why dont you bring out your pink miu miu's? i have a slight obsession with those.
the louise goldin shoes are beautiful though.
Posted by: a dreamer | 01 June 2008 at 05:53
dammit susie i hate you! you find the hottest (and cheapest) dresses in the worst places. urgh! why arent there places like that in Sydney?
Posted by: tanya | 01 June 2008 at 06:35
Oh man...I love it. I've always wanted to wear something of the like, but I'm decidedly much bigger than you so I don't know how it would turn out.
By the way, your boyf/you convo sounds almost like a direct transcript of most of the shopping conversations that I have with my boyf...mine is definitely not a shopper.
Posted by: Stella | 01 June 2008 at 07:28
Wow the dress is cute..and cheap can be chic too!
Just in case anyone is looking for Erin Fetherston

what's wrong with 'cheap'?...
hmmm.
nice dress though.
Posted by: Amy | 01 June 2008 at 08:34
Thanks guys.... yup, that was indeed a direct transcript.... the boyf wasn't objecting to shopping though but it was the shopping in the cheapie place that he didn't like....he's not into bargain hunting like I am which is why he got all hot and bothered at the DSM market sale too because it was so manic....
Emily: Drop me an email and maybe we can arrange something!
Cass: The fabric is pretty decent... though I wished the ruffles went all the way round the back as the back is just plain pink satin...always the way with cheap dresses, you never get a decent back...
It's not a snobbery thing against 'cheap' but more the shopping location.... these shops are properly seedy. And I've actually signed petitions against more of these kind of shops populating Oxford/Regent Street... I'd honestly rather see these heritage-rich streets return to their former glory and be decent places for tourists to visit... which is why I've made it a point not to go in before so it was a bit of a shopping first for me...
Nothing wrong with cheap of course wherever it comes from...!

He he! Fab dress! Similar thing happened with my friend the other day...a hunt for a nice cocktail dress, a certain cheapie shop we'd never go in, nice dress in the window €40 and 20min later she emerges triumphant with a fab royal blue ruffle halterneck dress...ok it wasn't quiet the bargain you got and it'll probably fall apart after 2 wears but sometimes you make some happy discoveries when you step outside your comfort zone! Oh and the ruffles on her dress don't go the whole way around either...seems to be a thing with cheap clothes.

oh my. which shop was this!?? i actually saw a quite amazing ruffled dress (similar to a peter jensen topshop creation) in one of the oxford street crapholes. i always walked past late at night though when it was closed, and it was gone when i eventually found the time to go in...
congrats on the dress. it looks amazing.
Posted by: kirsty lee | 01 June 2008 at 11:18
Weird! Wierd! Weird! I was on Oxford Street Friday eve and bought a black ruffled dress (without the ruffles at the back either!) from one of those cheap shops up by Shelley's shoes! I wonder how many other people who dont normally give those shops a second look has succummed to the cheap ruffles???
Posted by: Natty | 01 June 2008 at 11:54
