I'm getting a lot of interior brainwaves at the moment as I plan to move out of my hovel soon, with the boyf and into what will hopefully be a lush pad or at least Hovel v.2.2 beta. However, those ideas weren't ever going to escape the fashion realms and one of them involves an everchanging display where we try to 'artfully' hang some clothes with some tags giving a bit of a tale behind them. Not a precise factual history but just a little anecdote, a conversation, a story that is connected with the piece of clothing. AKA an idea that I aped when I was reading Dreamecho's review of the vintage store History in Boston which did the same thing, albeit their's were far more well-thought out.
I only have my travelling clothes with me but thankfully none of them are in the 'just a rubbish t-shirt' category so there's SOMETHING that can be said about them, so I gave my idea a bit of a practise run. I'll leave you to separate the facts from the fiction...

I love background stories like this, it's so cool to hear the tales behind the clothes! I bet you could write a book (or probably a series) about your entire closet..

I like the first story the best, but that's probably because I've thought of puncturing many of those who have truly angered me with my extra shard stilettos.

Very, very cool...you never cease to come up with [or well, go thru with] some very fun projects.
My favorite is the little snippet of a conversation and the gold...you can just picture it.

awww that's such a lovely story... perhaps your blog is really just electronic tags on your wardrobe? good luck with your move!

I blogged the story of my pink dress from Paris earlier this week. I'm trying to get others involved. Love the ruffle one.

also strikes me as kind of a romantic exercise (although maybe that wasn't the intention?)
especially heart the one about the shrug.

How lovely and clever! I love those shoes, and your photography is stunning! It's always nice to remember the stories behind the clothes -- it also reminds me some of A Dress A Day's Secret Lives of Dresses. Good luck on your move -- I'm planning on making a move in the near future too!

all clothes should be this fun.

i just love this! it shuns the thoughts that fashion is shallow, clothes can have meanings and memories too!
Posted by: selina | 25 April 2008 at 20:22
thanks for the linkety-link! i appreciate it lots.
your stories are wonderfully creepy/off. love that one about driving the heel into his heart...! (sounds like a good indie horror film if i ever heard one.)
Posted by: dreamecho | 25 April 2008 at 20:37
love these! a really fun idea... I've always toyed with the idea of little stories about random found things, and this is really neat way of doing it... would be a fascinating display if you got it all up!
Posted by: headmistress | 25 April 2008 at 20:39
Too cool, where do you find the time to do all these creative things! Love the label themselves and the typewritten font too. Sigh...

This post is great, Susie. I love the tags. We should all tag elements of our wardrobe! K
Posted by: K-Line | 26 April 2008 at 15:59
this is fabulous! So clever and witty, I wish all clothing tags had these stories printed on them.
On another note, the shoes in the first picture are AMAZING. I was staring at them for a good five minutes without moving.
I hope you'll check out my blog, I really like yours!

I love those shoes! Who made them?
Posted by: Lauren | 28 April 2008 at 02:30
I absolutely love your photos!
Posted by: Britt marie | 28 April 2008 at 16:21
That is pretty funny. At first I thought it was a real store that made them all, from where you got all your stuff. But then I realized you made them up and it's kind of a homage. I'm sure more stores will pick this idea up. It is cute.
Posted by: diana | 30 April 2008 at 07:39
The shoes are by Topshop Unique...really old actually!
Thank you everyone for leaving such lovely comments about this post.... some of them were slightly personal tales but heavily disguised of course.... I do think there is something in clothes that goes beyond just the aesthetic appeal of wearing them.... the sentimental value in most of my wardrobe means that I could probably regularly write things about them.... I may just do that if it doesn't bore you to tears...
We shall see!
Posted by: susie_bubble | 30 April 2008 at 12:14
Another great concept and done well too. I think were I to have attempted something similar I'd have over-egged it and written too much the snippet of prose on a label is great, reminiscent of a price tag but a much better read, and much more fundamental to the clothing than a price and a barcode could ever be!
Oh also, those shoes are amazing!
Posted by: Helen-LG | 30 April 2008 at 13:34
wow! You just made my day, or evening as the case may be... History was my store (I closed it this past summer so i could go back to teaching) and it was great to see the idea of the tags living on! I think that your stories are delightful, racy, and wise. May all your future adventures be so stylish... xo, Rachel
