*Yawn* Dye *Yawn*
Tins of Dylon dyes clutter up my drawers and make a mockery out of me. I stare at them and they stare back as if to say 'Ha... you bought us, dumped us because you couldn't be arsed to see your intended DIY projects through!'. Encouraged by Flying Saucer's scary uni halls kitchen dip dying incident that turned out to be quite the success and incidentally, The Clothes Horse was also getting crafty-tights happy too last night, I ventured into my kitchen and clinically went about dip dyeing some tights and a skirt in a purple Dylon dye that is circa 2000. Thankfully, dyes don't seem to have use-by dates and all went well apart from maybe the skirt not taking on the colour as strongly as the tights (synthetics are quite tricky to dye or so Dylon tells me...). Now the mind is reeling and I shall return to my nearest Dylon stockist with starry eyed enthusiasm and renewed faith that they won't be knocking about in my drawers and making me feel bad.

I love the tights in the right :)
Wish I could buy them!

Cool tights! A bit reminiscent of the leggings worn at the most recent Nina Ricci resort collection....:D

The tights are wonderful.
Very Christian Lacroix. The pair on the right makes me think you were up to your knees in grape juice if that makes any sense :)
Check out my blog,http://fashionably-insane.blogspot.com/ I'm trying to make it less copy catty and more me so it should turn out good.

I've always wanted to tie-dye a cardigan, but I've never dare to.

You did a lovely job!!! really like the purple!!!! and you seem to have started or caught on to trend as there is a tutorial on dipdying tights on fashionista!!!!!

Very nice!
Posted by: WendyB | 29 January 2008 at 23:05
I agree. Very HC Lacroix which really stood out to me. What color were the tights to begin with though? I'm really tempted to do something like this but i think white might be too harsh.....

woah! awesome. can you do blue as well??? i liked those sheer blue ones a while back on the runway...
Posted by: Fashion Tidbits | 29 January 2008 at 23:29
oooh i like! I too have some dye hanging around(in fuschia)maybe i will give this a go this weekend too!
Posted by: Winnie | 29 January 2008 at 23:30
oooooo loving the leggings!! definitely getting more dye to use on tights. i was worried they would be unflattering or i'd look like a 14 year old scene/nu-rave kid but i just love them on you, especially how you've played with wearing two two-tone (hehe) things. It may be the perfect opportunity to wear the H&M pink-purple skirt that i'm finding hard to put with things because of the long a-line shape. i feel a bit guilty i've discarded leggings for so many months, you look fab
Posted by: selina | 29 January 2008 at 23:35
You did it! They look marvelous and I may just need to try this out myself! Also, I love that you chose purple.

I'll be looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
Posted by: enc | 30 January 2008 at 02:51
Ha! Those are fantastic. Maybe I should dye some of my old clothes to make them more loveable...
Posted by: The Clothes Horse | 30 January 2008 at 03:05
Those tights are to die for awesomeness!!

Excellent results! I've been loving the 'ombre' fad myself, but hadn't seen it applied to tights yet. Neat idea!

I also planned to dip dye my clothes purple this week. So don't think I'm copying you when you see my results! Haha.

I really want to try this but I'm a bit worried about all the potential mess!
Posted by: Miss White | 30 January 2008 at 11:44
hey susie! coincidentally, we're doin dylon at school as well and we been advised to use soda ash to treat all fabrics before dying. >.< just a tip!

Hi there, I really like it that you model your looks yourself on your blog(I do that on mine, too). It's much more fun! I hate the blog where people just paste pictures from ads and/or press releases.
And I love colorful your tights!

Those turned out fantastic! I always wanted to tie-dye a shirt back in the 90s when batik was big, but I never came around to doing so. Thankfully, maybe...

Looks like you did a great job there, Susie- the dip-dye skirt and tights look really, really good. I'm almost tempted to attempt it myself..
Posted by: Drusilla | 30 January 2008 at 15:30
Ah! I have been meaning to do this with some tights ever since I spotted the Antiann pair. Nice work!
Posted by: Mia | 30 January 2008 at 16:24
I love the tights, still can't believe they're DIY. I actually found great print foot-less tights at artfulwears.com. You can pair them with essentially anything for a funky edge.

While I'm at it, I must give the love to that Eley Kishimoto tartan dress too- it's the loveliest, even though you haven't given it the dye treatment (and shouldn't, IMO)!

This worked really well - great idea for bringing old clothes up to date. I'm off to buy some Dylon, lets hope it doesn't sit in my drawer and then i'll feel bad for not using it!

everyone has ombre on the brain; haha i DIYed too after spotting it on an APC dress this summer!

Oh! Love the footless tights!
I have a white skirt I want to dye (well, I'll have to, since I washed it with a yellow shirt and I ruined it...). I loved Dylon when I was in high school, made a lot of things with their colors!
Now I only have to find a stockist near where I live and hopefully I'll have soon a new skirt for the Spring ;-)

They look great! Taking a bit of advantage of your post...anyone out there has any experience dying jeans? I want to make a pair go darker, but don't even know where to start! Any tips will be truly appreciated!

Can I ask whether you used a sink or pan? I really want to go crazy on a cardigan, but I don't know if my housemate will be pleased if the sink/pan ends up ruined!

ok you are officially the grande dame of DIY now!
