Pyjama Rainy Days

It isn't a horrid rainy day but a misty hazy grey rainy day.  As soon as that sort of light wispy rain falls where you don't actually need an umbrella but rather you, walk through and it feels like those Evian spray mists are constantly on you, I think about wanting to re-watch my ultimate late childhood film 'Only Yesterday' or in Japanese 'Omohide Poro Poro', directed by Hotaru Okamoto released by Studio Ghibli (of the more famous Hayao Miyazaki films...).  People have their own definitive 'coming of age' films and this was one of mine.  It's an animated film that touches on subjects that are most definitely adult, about a girl who can't quite get let go of her childhood and all the memories that she has from it.  It borders on being a bit Judy Blume-esque with its talk of menstruation, blushing boy crushes and sisterly jealousy but it's all still done with reassuring innoncent prettiness in the only way that Studio Ghibli does.  A DVD that definitley needs to be stowed away for days like these whilst drinking fruit tea and eating something homemade.

After watching it, the things that I take away from the film, besides the memorable lines and beautiful score, visually, are the wash of misty/pale colours used in the backgrounds, the skin tones and the clothes as the main character remembers her childhood with slightly faded hues.  I was in a bit of a wash-out mood a while back and now combined with these 'Pyjama Parties' images from the Dec/Jan Paris Vogue shot by Mark Segal, on this particular day, an old Marks & Spencer silk pyjama shirt got a look in.  An outfit for 'Only Yesterday' watching and general pottering around.

Of course I am dressing up this grey drabness of a post to cover up the fact that I'm in and out of the toilet with a hideous stomach virus.... sorry I had to ruin the somewhat pretty-pretty musings.

i love it!and that ed. was really cute!!

I think everyone has those films you associate with your own coming of age...and Studio Ghibli is amazing.
I loved that editorial, too (supermodel cuddling up to a fuzzy lion cub? I still feel a little warm and fuzzy thinking about it)- though I don't think you'd want to take care of a tiger cub in your present state- hope you and the boyf get better soon, Susie!

Or, for that matter, any kind of cub.

ahhh, love love love this film, esp. with its random hungarian folk songs, nostalgic overtones and its lovely soothing colouring...

hope you get over your virus soon!

Get better soon!

Aww this is my favorite Ghibli movie! I alllways cry at the end. :)

Get well soon.

I started a work related blog (I'm a make up artist) but it is all in french.

Wow, I never saw that movie, which is funny considering that I used to have a boyfriend who was kind of Miyazaki obsessed.

I love the faded colors in your outfit--and the shape of that blouse (?) too!! I hope you feel better!

I love those colours together
I am so bored of the rain, I can't wait for it to stop. It has already ruined a pair of my shoes!

Hope you feel better! That movie looks great, I think I'll have to check it out!

i served u coffee today@tinderbox!! lol:p

I like the outfit, but I can't help but think of food hygiene when I look at it. I think the length and shape of the pajama shirt, and maybe the collar, that remind me of the white coats that are worn in places like butchers :D Maybe a belt around the middle would fix this?

Melody: Yes, I do need a belt but I don't have one in the right colour... it is purely for lounging at home though...

Nicole: Thank you! Twas' very nice....

And thank you for the get well notes... feeling much better!! The worse of it was last night....let's not go there!

I love Studio Ghibli. Your outfit looks great. The grey shorts are so interesting and the blue top with the buttons is really nice. And the photo shoot with Sasha was one of my more recent favorites; very nice styling and beautiful colors.

Love you're Blog¡¡¡
Awesome ¡¡

i really like studio ghibli movies=) but i never thought of taking inspiration from them for outfits.. guess i better keep my eyes more open.

One of my favorite outfits from you, I even saved the picture. Thanks for the link again! <3

I hope you get well soon Susie, loving all the soft and pretty pretty colours.

That ad is so perfect - Sasha and the little lion, the colours ...
Get well soon!

ah... the winter ills... i'm sorry to hear youre sick... although, this weekend, the boyf is sick and we watched anime film 'sprirted away' yesterday.. its such a cute movie.

oh studio ghibli just makes the most wonderful films. do you know Tonari no Totoro? it is such an awesome movie.

I can't wait to watch this film. I'll have to try and find it on netflix. All your movie recommendations through out your blog have been pretty spot on, you know. . .

I totally stash this film away for rainy days and tea drinking!!! I have a stash of vintage jammies I layer up with when I'm feeling this way.

I love that movie^^

Only yesterday is so beautiful!
