I'm back in the land of grey skies, bare skeletal trees and where a Bonfire Night smell has permeated the air. After a horrendous flight and having my suitcase hacked into by US Immigration, I'm thankfully home.
Please bear with me whilst I get back into normal Style Bubble blogging mode as I have HEAPS to say about my past nine days in Miami as well as the usual fashion heap to comment on. As a starter though, I thought it would be nice to remind myself of the wonderful Hyères competition that I attended in April (Yeah for Hyères!), by talking up this new collection by Hyères 2007 Grand Prize winner Sandra Backlund, that was shown as part of the Carte Blanche series of the Arts of Fashion International Fashion Show competition held on Saturday at a beauty of a building in downtown Miami.
Having had the chance to speak to Sandra and get to know her these last few days, the main thing that struck me is that she is someone who is extremely comfortable in solitude, hence why she chooses to work in Stockholm as opposed to any other fashion capital and why she mostly works alone on her collection. There is no swaying/bending to what is going on in the fashion climate hence why her work is so unique in its ideas, execution, choice of materials and forms. I actually think this new collection that she showed in Miami surpasses the Ink Blot collection which won her the prize at Hyères. The cream colour, the mix of fine crochet and that chunky thick knit as well as a more singular vision in terms of materials (save for a clothes peg dress which looked sublime...) made a far more coherent collection and gets me excited as to what Backlund will produce next.
Professional fashion stuff aside, Sandra is just about the nicest, sweetest girl I've met who has a genuine modesty about her. Plus, she has the cutest collection of dresses... (the pic above was unfortunately somewhat marred by the lurid attrocity that was the Radisson Miami carpet... )
What is with the US Immigration hacking suit cases? When I traveled to Austin (from Canada), the same thing happened to me. At least the trip itself was worth it.

Sandra Backlund honored the Foundation in presenting a very pure, fresh and so beautiful new collection in Miami, that we are still all under the "shock" and amazed by the unbelievable talent of Sandra.
Not only it demonstrates that the Fine Art background of Sandra opens new doors for creativity in Fashion but definitively, it was the perfect message of encouragement for all fashion students, young designers, faculties and public that creativity, originality, high level design and craft as well as unicity have still long life to add in such a so saturated and repetitive fashion industry.
One more time, thank you Sandra and congratulation!
