Well we all know that London streetwear trends range from the very normal and generic to the very very weird.... Actually, I'm not sure whether that statement is true but I just said it to accomodate what I'm about to tell you.
I like Sponge Bob Square Pants. I didn't get it at first but then I happily went along with it and just admitted that Sponge Bob tickles my cartoon fancies and I yearn for those days when I got home early enough to watch it.
I just didn't think that Sponge Bob would be adopted as London's nu-rave cartoon hero. Perhaps I missed the signs. He is bright and yellow with some seriously googly eyes (replace googly eyes with those freaky magnifying eye-glasses in reality) and he does run wild everywhere causing general chaos and freaking the hell out of under-the-sea habitants (replace with people who still scratch their heads at the term 'Nu-rave'). Super Super magazine salutes Sponge Bob in a big way in issue 7 with about 4 references to the fellow. (Nothing about Patrick though....which is pretty tragic...), including an encouraging write-up to snap up some Sponge Bob gear at New Look, of all places.
Of course Super Super's hyper reality cannot be seen as something rampaging the streets but I DID manage to snap the dude on the bottom right, bopping away to Daft Punk at the Wireless festival donning his Sponge Bob visor with pride and also an assortment of Sponge Bob necklaces (obscured by the plastic horse.... a whole other point of discussion really....).
I'm just about down for mixing up the visor with the Preen dress.....maybe but as much as I love watching Sponge Bob and Co, wearing him is another thing altogether.
