Amongst the sea of blandness....

Much like the initial collections from fashion week last September, I have been distinctly underwhelmed by the spring/summer ads that are now starting to surface in all the fashion rags/mags. It seems to be a sea of blank canvases with no real concept. There's understated and there's just sheer laziness. I'm predicting something amazing or at least amazingly laughable from Miu Miu as Lindsay Lohan is fronting its spring campaign. In the meantime though, the new YSL ad has come through, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (as opposed to Juergen Teller who has shot YSL's campaigns for the past few seasons) and it's pretty fabulous.  Sure it may lack the 'edge' that one would expect from Mert and Marcus but at least I don't forget them in about two nanoseconds.  I just have a huge penchant for Karen Elson and as Stefano Pilati says, I also think she is 'emblematic of the YSL woman.' The spring collection itself suits Elson to a tee with its luxury take on the humble check pattern and as outworldly and amazing that Karen looks, I think of her as quite down to earth at the same time.

Now, like the last season's collections, I'm hoping for a major pick up on the ad front.

You're right, Karen Elson is awesome. And most certainly the embodiment of the YSL woman, just as she is emblematic of every label she's ever advertised for.

How on earth can they choose Lohan? At this point her credibility is NOT up to par. Esp for such an upstanding brand. I'm interested in how she'll come off. Mischa B. looks elegant in the Bebe campaign, so perhaps L.L. will, too.

I first thought 'Westwood' when I saw those ads - and yeah, they're the best of a bad bunch. You've got the new Vogue's trend lineup, right? Man, it's all hideous! What the hell can I wear this summer? Obviously very little will filter down to the high street (except yellow, I reckon) - wonder what the ground-up trends will be instead?

I'm actually happy about this season's ads. A lot of labels have changed faces and used more new faces, which is nice, like for example Chanel. Daria was getting so boring, but now with Freja it seems like a bit of a fresh start. I'm looking forward to spring!

There's a picture from the spring Prada campaign here:

Karen Elson is indeed really something... its like the future model icon.

Oh, I love the photo on the left, especially that orange jacket with the checked skirt … mmm

And a big thumbs down to YSL for signing Lohan on. For me YSL is european elegance with just enough of a twist. Brainy style, maybe. Lohan is tacky, drunken, and rarely what one might call 'put-together'
