I'm all for turning the mundane into the sublime. Campbell's Soup print dresses? I'm there. Potato sack dress. Sign me up. A dress made out of McDonalds holiday gift cards? I'd have to object on account of the fact that I got shortchanged on a Big Mac three months ago. It only had ONE hamburger pattie in it - that scarred me for life, that did. Jay McCarroll, the winner of Project Runway Season 1 is obviously 'lovin it' as he designed this McDonalds gift card dress held together with crystal straps for a McDonalds charity fashion show in New York on Tuesday. Kelis rocked the catwalk wearing said dress to her song Milkshake (though I don't think she was singing about the gunge McD's serve me when I'm desperate for a sugar brain freeze.....). Now, Kelis is one of those people that can rock many a things. Neon Tsubi jeans for one. But somehow this Paco Rabanne-esque design just doesn't really work on her. Or maybe using a McD's gift card as a raw material is not quite as sharp/cool as aluminium squares a la this original Paco Rabanne design.
Anyhow, the dress will be up for grabs on eBay to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities which is a very good cause, so if you don't hold any bitter food grudges against Ronald McDonald then by all means be my guest.

isn't he a vegetarian or something, though? i'd rather wear jeff sebelia anyway... ;)

I thought it was hypocritical too considering that he is all about animal rights. It is like did you not read fast food nation?
Anyway, the event itself was tragic. I have some video of it on Almost Girl if you wan to see. Like I wrote in my post I just felt bad for Mao which was the PR firm handling it. They are so cool and to have McDonalds corporate mess it up, well yeah. It was sad.

it's a shame that Lizzy Gardiner already did this look in 1995 with American Express cards.

All the celeb sites have been aghast at this dress. All I could think when I saw it was that the woman who co-designed the 'Priscilla Queen of the Desert' costumes wore something similar.
