Location: Tea Palace, Notting Hill
Date: 30th November
Participants: Me, wearing Veronique Branquinho cream column dress over blue stripy t-shirt, teal blue tights, black puffa jacket, Gap oversized black patent tote and Salvatore Ferragamo black bow pumps. Friend, wearing Earnest Sewn jeans, black Topshop top, beige MaxMara coat, Prada bag and Bertie shoes
Background: Me, haven't seen Friend in a while. Met up for "afternoon" tea and drinks.
Friend: So this whole blog thing is really taking off. That's really great!
Me: *sheepishly* Yeah..... it's kinda cool...... don't really know what to make of it....
Friend: And the people who comment seem to really love your style..!
Me: Um....yeah....I guess but I don't really want it to be like 'Oh here's me looking fab, don't I look fab?'. It's more like getting ideas across.
Friend: To be honest though...... probably half those people would never be able to get away with what you wear.
Me: Why's that?
Friend: Well....if we're being completely un-PC, it's blatantly coz you're Chinese and have the right 'look' to pull it off!
*Me pulls contorted furrowed eyebrow face*
Me: No way! That's such an old stereotype...the thing about Japanese people having really out-there style and only they can pull it off. I disagree. It might be that MORE people from HK, Japan etc are more experimental simply because they dare to wear, not because they're the only ones who pull it off.
Friend: Maybe.....but I still think it's a whole lot easier to get away with crazy outfits if you have those racial genes.
*Me went quietly thoughtful....*
Me: Hmm.... I dunno..... *looks uncomfortable*
Friend: I mean I would never wear what you wear but you know what, if I was oriental, I might just for the sake of being able to get away with it!
Friend: So where shall we go drinking later?
END OF CONVERSATION
This isn't the first time I've discussed something like this but I'll stick to my line. It MAY BE that in proportion MORE Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc people are inclined to dress adventurously but this in no way means that they're the only ones who can pull off what they wear. I have never thought about the scenario of 'If I was born another race, would I wear the same thing...' because I don't really think my ethnicity bears any influence other than the fact I have travelled more extensively in the Far East and have been exposed to a different kind of streetstyle. Just typing this post out makes me feel a little uncomfortable but it is a style issue that not many have discussed online and as you probably know, I have a lot of thoughts spillage.
This is something that I'm DEFINITELY curious to hear your thoughts on..let the discussion begin.... and I apologise if you were in anyway offended by conversation A. Friend is actually a really nice person. She bought me three peach and vodka slushes later.
