Avant Guardians: The Next Generation?

I always think the boundaries of fashion photographies have been progressively pushed so that rather then letting just the clothes do the talking, other dimensions, environments and point of views are incorporated into the pictures.  With Surface magazine's 9th Annual Avant Guardian project, it celebrates emerging American photographers who are doing just that.  This year's 8 selected Avant Guardians don't simply present fashion as static or flat but as something with a little bit more weight behind it.

Kurt Iswarienko // Ari Murakami - I like the way the ring is broken down into graphic facets.

Andrew Yee - A beautiful sense of movement // Jaime Chard - A super brand forcefully impressed onto us.

Colin Dodgson // Munetaka Tokuyama

Francesca Tallone - Surprisingly the only female out of this year's picks and incidentally one of my online friends over at TFS.  The way she has the model disappearing represents I think the fleeting moments and fickleness of fashion.  Much congratulations to Fran for being selected as an Avant Guardian! // Bill Durgin - Very Bourdin-esque!

Not to be five, but it took me about ten seconds to realize that was a bare bottom. Amazing set of photos, graphic and forceful. Makes me want to break my own camera.

Really, the Bill Durgin photo is incredible.

Archive Notes

  • As I post so frequently, the archive is organised by week but this blog has been up and running since March 2006 so if you want to read from the ye olde beginning, just keep going back through the weeks or alternatively, go through the archives via Category.

  • It's back to ol' YouTube vids then... I'm obsessed with this track by Miike Snow... a little disturbed that these are the same guys who came up with Britney's Toxic...
