It always strikes me as a little odd when people newly discover the London-based label Preen, since this year, it celebrates it's 10th anniversaty. I guess ten years existing as an independent label is no mean feat. During London Fashion Week, at the Elms Lester Gallery, there was a retrospective of sketches, photographs and show videos that document Preen's ten years as one of London's most succesful and exciting labels. Justin Thornton and Thea Bragazzi met when they were 18 back in the Isle of Man where they both grew up and set up Preen in 1996 in Portobello where they still have a store. I caught the exhibition on it's last day and it really did make me appreciate why Preen is such an asset to London Fashion Week. It doesn't need to outdo other labels in originality because their smart cutting and use of detailing and draping is consistently appealing to me yet there is always variety and a fashion forwardness to their collections. Every year, there is always a big big Preen sample sale. I stumbled upon the sale about three years ago and now I look forward to my yearly Preen fix. This year will be more significant than others.
